About Me.
Billy J has been on the music scene since his debut release, One Step Closer, in 2005, which became
one of the fastest selling independently released albums to date overseas. Billy J has become a household name
overseas and has gained a following of dedicated fans along his musical journey.
Born on November 4, 1983 in Detroit, Michigan to Kim Johnson and Billy Underwood, Billy J gives a
great deal of credit for his musical gift and success to his magnificent mother. While growing up he often heard
her singing with family members at various locations or singing around the house while cleaning. Billy J got his
musical start in the same church choir as his mother and other family members under the direction of his aunt,
Helen Moore, where she imparted priceless information that he still carries with him today.

He also gives credit to several R&B singers that paved the way for him especially Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye,Donnie Hathaway, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, and The Four Tops. After a short hiatus to regroup and enhance his skills, Billy J began working on material for his second album, Journey of a Man. He took his time recording the album and deemed it “one of his best albums yet.” Ready to experiment with a different sound, he called on Craig Te, a talented songwriter from Detroit, to help bring his vision to life. Together they created a masterpiece. After the release of his latest work, he decided to take a break again, never thinking that break would extend six years. During his time off from music, Billy J fulfilled a personal goal by receiving his Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. The most significant reason he didn’t realize how much time had passed was that he was busy nurturing his biggest blessing, his son.The six-year hiatus allowed Billy J time to live and learn valuable life lessons. During his time away from recording and performing, he experienced the loss his grandmother, relationship highs and lows, and family conflict. Those lessons allowed him to write and produce over thirty songs for his next album, Bipolar. The album takes listeners on a journey of love, sex, and heartbreak. Billy J’s writing on the project is raw, emotional, and even dark in some places. He stated, “Working on this album was very therapeutic and helped to heal a lot of wounds.”Billy J released and shot videos for “I'm Back” featuring ZDash, “Come Into My Room”, and “Send Up Love”, which is dedicated to his beloved Grandmother. Shortly after the release of Bipolar, he faced a life altering challenge; he needed to have both hips replaced. After living with hip pain for over a year, which limited his standing, walking, and dancing abilities, he decided to proceed with the surgery. The procedure was a success. Throughout his physical recovery, persistent thoughts of getting back on stage kept him going. Once ready to return to music, Billy J decided to expand his brand beyond performing and making music. With renewed motivation and a fresh vision, he founded a production company, MTJ Productions. The mission of MTJ Productions is to create musical outlets for other up and coming artists. He hopes to build upon current relationships and forge new relationships with venues to highlight raw talent and give R& B artists the spotlight they deserve. Currently, nothing comparable exists in the metro Detroit area. Billy J has set out to prove that R& B music isn’t dead, especially in Motown. Keep your eyes open for future events and concerts produced by MTJ Productions. In late 2019, Billy J started working on his latest music. Shortly thereafter, the global pandemic derailed his recording plans. Now back on track, he has created new music highlighting his growth and maturity. He worked with amazing writers and featured artists such as Grammy Award winning songwriter Antea Birchett who has written for Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. He also enlisted the talent of Sam Watson, Katrina Carson, Patrick Cooks, Craig Te, Jeff Dean, Jai Fears and Gucci Rie. In early 2020, he shot the video for the single “Love Tonight” featuring Jai Fears. In July 2022, the highly anticipated album Black Tie Affair was released. In 2020 Billy J began receiving scripts and auditioning for movie roles. He views acting as another outlet for his creativity and loves being able to transform into different characters. Billy J has had three film roles in less than three years: The Noise in Music (2021), Black Lies (2021) and Parental Discretion Advised(2022). Billy J is currently reviewing scripts to determine his next role.
